~Ways of Knowing in the Nursing Situation~
Personal: acceptance of self that is grounded in self-knowledge and confidence
- In the nursing situation, Nurse Olga did not get to know the patient on a personal level. She did not gain self-awareness through interaction with another person. If she were to have been aware of Sally, she would have been able to better take care of her.
Aesthetic: the art of nursing
- This way of knowing involves deep appreciation of the meaning of the situation. Nurse Olga did not move beyond the surface of what she needed to do for her patient. She could have used more nurse's intuition and showed empathy.
Ethical: the component of moral knowledge in nursing
- Nurse Olga did not use her sense of right and wrong in this situation. The right thing to do would have been to at least ask the patient how she was and show that she cared. It is a nurse's responsibility to make sure the patient is doing well mentally as well as physically.
Empirical: the science of nursing
- There are serious social barriers to health and well-being. In order for Sally to be healthy she needed to have social interaction. Since she did not see her family, the only person there was to be there for her was Nurse Olga who failed to pay attention to Sally.
